OUR WORK

ALCATEL SUBMARINE NETWORKS
GREENWICH, LONDON

Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) (now acquired by Nokia Networks) is the world’s only fully integrated provider of turnkey submarine network solutions . Since 1850s, ASN has been producing repeaters, branching units and power feeding equipment at the site in Greewich, London. It was at this site that the world’s first transatlantic cable was manufactured in 1858. Today, the site houses modern production and clean room facilities as well as office space for project management and marine operations teams.
Atom Consultants was chartered to redesign the existing facilities dating back to inter- and post-war period to include new clean rooms, office spaces, and a new café and an entrance area. To help finance the investment, the surplus land at the site was sold to create a contemporary, high-quality community of new homes including a mixture of apartments and houses, called Telegraph Works.

The proposed scheme includes a refurbished factory and office space that will not only provide a more efficient, modern and attractive working environment for employees, but will also improve the character and visual appearance of the area.
The main contractor assigned for the works is Bluehammer who won the contract on the basis of a scheme design initially developed by Arup. Bluehammer appointed Atom Consultants to undertake the final design of the structural alterations which included the addition of significant additional floor areas for office and manufacturing facilities. The refurbishment also included long span Glulam timber frames forming the new remodelled entrance elevation and the reception atrium. Connections to the existing structural elements needed to be developed so that they could transmit the loading into the retained concrete frame whilst maintaining and aesthetic appearance required by the Architect and the Client.
The geotechnical survey identified a layer of soft alluvium overlying firm gravel deposits and therefore, the foundations to the building combined the existing building foundations with the addition of new piles to support the loading from the new floors and plant room areas. Atom Consultants evaluated the final loading on the piles which were designed by foundation specialist Roger Bullivant.

” Atom Consultants provided much valued assistance to our Project Management team throughout this major redevelopment of an established operational site. “
