CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT- PARIS

Terminal 2E building of the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris is possibly the largest modular building in the world. This multi million Euro project consists of modules spanning 25 m in width and 80 m in length. Atom Consultants worked on this highly repetitive modular solution in conjunction with Watson Steel for the main contractor Aeroport de Paris. We were responsible for the structural design of the steel work, which involved extremely complex geometry with multiple intersecting curves forming separate internal and external shapes. This challenging structure boasts tapered and curved plate girders up to 3 meters deep, spanning 57 meters between supports, which in turn form shells, which are also tapered on plan and cantilever by 23 meters past the last support. The elaborate shape of the structure could only be resolved by utilising BIM throughout , which also turned out to be the most cost effective approach for this project. And yes, the section we designed is not the one which collapsed in 2004 (just thought we mention it!)
