OUR WORK
PINDERFIELDS HOSPITAL – WAKEFIELD
The redevelopment of the Pinderfields Hospital for the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, has brought Wakefield the much needed state-of-the-art facilities which have been designed around the patients’ needs and include the latest technology and equipment. The Balfour Beatty led, fast track 190-week construction involved demolition of the old site, built in 1900, and the build of 90,000 m² of acute hospital space on a footprint of 22,000m². The themes of space, natural light and colour were conceived as two parallel wings for acute and inpatient services, liked by a central public atrium, with other blocks radiating outwards to form a series of courtyards. The eastern block, containing specialist outpatient units, was designed with a steel frame while the western building contains the acute hospital departments and was designed with a concrete frame. Atom Consultants provided BIM Coordination Services and Temporary Works Design in line with the client’s main criteria of sustainability and efficiency. This truly fabulous hospital, fully opened in 2011, houses several regional and specialist centres, such as a Regional Burns Centre and a Neonatal Intensive and High Dependency Care, and is an unmistakably superior addition to the whole region’s health and care needs.

HEALTHCARE:
Atom Consultants has been appointed on numerous different construction projects which have been operational under my control as Project Director and Major Projects Director at Balfour Beatty Construction. Atom Consultants are an experienced Civil & Structural Consultancy, however, in addition to this, they are particularly specialised in the areas of: Temporary Works, Modular Construction, BIM Management, BIM Co-ordination, Building and Land Surveying (including Photogrammetry). Their Civil Engineering department have supervised drainage inspection work on projects under my control and have carried out the drainage and sewage design in relation to alterations to existing and new installations. Vauxhall Underground Station- London
The Vauxhall Underground Station modernisation is part of Transport for London’s ongoing investment into London’s public transport network to support economic growth and employment opportunities.
The £36m project entailed reconfiguration of the station’s ticket hall to accommodate extra ticket gates and wide-aisle gates, as well as the refurbishment of the stations’ subways, ticket hall and stairs. The main part of the project was to make the access to the station step-free, enabling the station to handle 40% more passengers by installing a new shaft and lift between the ticket hall and platforms. A particular challenge was posed by the station remaining fully operational while the construction work took place between 2014 and 2016.
Winton Primary School Sports Hall- London
The London Borough of Islington had a requirement for a new sports hall to be used out-of-hours by the local community and it was to be built on the roof of and existing school- Winton Primary School.
To minimise disruption to this ‘live’ site, a modular approach was adopted. All components of the build were pre-fabricated, starting from the structural steel wall and roof panels and ending with the beautiful western red cedar clad external facade.
