OUR WORK

WINTON PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS HALL- LONDON:

Project Name: Winton Primary Rooftop Sports Hall

Cost: £830K

Completion: 2004

The London Borough of Islington had a requirement for a new sports hall to be used out-of-hours by the local community and it was to be built on the roof of and existing Victorian-aged Winton Primary School’s building.    Funded by the Government’s ‘Space for Sports and Arts ‘ initiative and managed through a partnership between the London Borough of Islington’s Education Department, this sports hall has become a thriving center for a whole community.

To minimise disruption to this ‘live’ site, a modular approach was adopted. All components of the build were pre-fabricated, starting from the structural steel wall and roof panels and ending with the beautiful western red cedar clad external facade. Cartwright Pickard Architects’s modular design enabled the off-site manufactured pre-clad panels to be assembled on-site in just a few days, while the standardised manufacturing approach resulted in a high finish both internally and externally.

Atom Consultants acted as the Principle Structural Engineers to this Bluestone built truly unique 20m x 20m sports hall, creating all  modularisation and structural designs using BIM. The highly standardised and quality-controlled pre-fabricated wooden panels used in external cladding and internal walls facilitated quick assembly and minimised construction work at height providing for a much safer approach for the construction workers. The whole scheme was also nominated for the Wood Award and stands testament to a new approach to building fit for 21st century.

Vauxhall Underground Station- London

Vauxhall Underground Station- London

The Vauxhall Underground Station modernisation is part of Transport for London’s ongoing investment into London’s public transport network to support economic growth and employment opportunities.

The £36m project entailed reconfiguration of the station’s ticket hall to accommodate extra ticket gates and wide-aisle gates, as well as the refurbishment of the stations’ subways, ticket hall and stairs. The main part of the project was to make the access to the station step-free, enabling the station to handle 40% more passengers by installing a new shaft and lift between the ticket hall and platforms. A particular challenge was posed by the station remaining fully operational while the construction work took place between 2014 and 2016.
